Feb 21 - Pirate for a Day at Texas Children's

Today was a beautiful day here in Houston, Texas. We at For A Day were happy to be back at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center to serve our guests: 12 girls, 10 boys, and their families. Helping us were Amanda Klein, Mei Jen, Viviana Almeira, and Jellene from Elite Care 24 Hour Emergency Center.

These amazing volunteers set up everything necessary for our "Pirate For a Day" event. They put pirate hats, craft activities, and goody bags filled with candy, a teddy bear, and a safety kit that were generously donated by Elite Care 24 Hour Emergency Center. Thanks to sponsors' donations, we plan on including fun goody bags for the children starting with this event. We also had fantastic yarn wigs from The Magic Yarn Project, which provided Jack Sparrow yarn wigs and Uma yarn wigs. The Uma yarn wig is a special design that they made just for our "Pirate For a Day " events. We are truly grateful to the Magic Yarn Project for always providing the children with amazing yarn wigs and beanie hats. The children that attend our events love them!

We had Pirate Twins characters from Houston Hero Headquarters come to interact with the children and have pictures taken. We brought our Polaroid camera and provided miniature polarized pictures for the children who wanted to have pictures taken with the Pirate Twins. The children and their families all enjoyed posing for pictures; many parents also took pictures with their phones.

For our crafts activities, we had a pirate flag craft the children enjoyed constructing together using sticks and stickers. We also had canvas drawstring bags for the children to color with markers and crayons. We were really surprised to find out how fun and easy was for the children to color the bags with crayons.  We also had Valentine cards for the children to give to family and friends.

Churrasco Food Truck & Catering provided an amazing lunch for all the children and their families. Lunch included chicken, rice, salad, plantains, jalapenos, and, for dessert, churros. Everyone loved the food! A number of people went back to ask for seconds. Some children who had never tried churros before today found the churros delicious. In total, 60 people were able to have a great lunch thanks to Churrasco Food Truck & Catering.

What a great event. We at For A Day feel we accomplished our mission when we see all the smiles from children who come to the event with tears after blood draws and treatments.

P.S. This same day we found out that For a Day Foundation-Houston Chapter won a $5,000 grant from the British American Foundation of Texas. We are overjoyed at this fantastic news!
