June 14 - St. Mary's Children's Hospital - Queen & Hero for a Day

On June 14, 2018 the Palm Beach Chapter hosted an event at St. Mary’s Children Hospital. There were 6 children participating (4 girls and 2 boys).  The ages ranged from 6 to 12. The event was attended by Taylor Tyson, Staci Tyson, Mary Davis and Tammy Rockefeller from CenterState Bank.

This was our first event for this Chapter, and we were thrilled to have Mary and Tammy as eager volunteers as well as sponsors.

We were escorted by two of the child life specialists, both very helpful to work with. We made about 10 goodie bags (four others requested one since they did not feel well enough to go to the playrooms).  Inside the bags for the girls we put their tiaras, fingernail polish, foam seahorses to make and decorate, stickers, sparkly markers and the For A Day postcard and business card for information on keeping in touch.  For the boys we put their super hero capes, puzzles, foam seahorses to make and decorate, stickers, sparkly markers and the For A Day postcard and business card for information on keeping in touch.

The children that did come had a great time making door hangers for their room and/or IV poles, foam animals and stars to make and decorate.  The kids were talkative, smiled and really enjoyed spending time away from their rooms. The girls LOVED the tiaras and nail polish – pink was the color of choice for all of them! The craft activities we brought were very popular, and the girls picked out the sparkliest, girliest decorations for their door-hangers. The boys loved the superhero-themed sticker books and wanted to decorate everything with them.

We spent around 2.5 hours with the kids – we were able to get smiles, laughs, and giggles out of most of them. Hospital staff expressed gratitude to giving the kids a change of pace, and a positive distraction from their treatment.
