Although interacting with the kids was a highlight of the event, the most awe-inspiring moments came from conversing with family members of cancer patients. Did you know that only 4% of federal government cancer research funding goes to study pediatric cancer? One family from Oklahoma stopped by the booth and spoke to us about the loss of one of their young family members earlier that year and how her life and her struggle were worth more than just 4%. Despite this somber conversation, it reiterated that there is so much more work to be done to find a cure for pediatric cancer and how important it is to continuously enrich the lives of pediatric cancer patients all over the nation.
“As we were leaving, one parent spoke very earnestly on how grateful she was for our activities. She emphasized how much it meant that instead of just finding a good TV show to watch they were able to have a special treatment and activities for fun during their appointment. It was very touching to see the impact and the bright smiles.”
Thursday, April 21st, we had a party at the Inova Fairfax pediatric oncology wing children’s playroom, and visited two hospital rooms as well. There were 2 boys and 5 girls. Click to read more!
Today we visited the Inova Fairfax outpatient clinic for pediatric oncology. Although because of spring break there were fewer patients than normal/expected, there were 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls. Click to read more about the little girl in the photo!
We LOVE being part of CureFest each year!
