Today was Northern NY’s first For a Day party! It was a huge success and there are no words to describe the reaction I witnessed. In attendance were my wonderful volunteers; Myself, Jordynn Barnhart, Melissa, Kane, Amanda Wall, Cathy Renner and Patti Gomez. Patti was our special guest as Mrs. Syracuse and made a huge impact on the children. In total, we saw 8 girls and 7 boys.
We started off at the Upstate Cancer Center outpatient clinic. We set up food, and organized a basket full of tiaras, boas, a huge variety of nail polish and makeup, super hero capes and masks, superhero toy figures, a basketball, coloring books and star wars puzzles.
We walked around and introduced ourselves to the kids and they started opening up to us. Mrs. Syracuse did the honors of spending time with the children and filling their day with joy. We had the privilege of painting the girls nails and applying makeup. Then, we made a stop at the inpatient unit and visited some amazing children battling illnesses. It was amazing making them smile and providing toys, boas and tiaras. Our last visitor was a 17 year old and she was happy to see us and got to choose some nail polish and makeup. I truly believe we made a difference that day.
One child who stood out was a 15 year old boy who was having his very first treatment in the outpatient clinic. His mom felt it was so special that we came on the same day as his first treatment. He expressed that he loved it and asked us to come for every treatment he has!
Our special guests were Mrs. Syracuse & Mrs. Onondaga County!
I would like to thank my sponsors; Rochester Black Bird Design who made our custom t-shirts, Mario’s Bakery who donated 5 dozen half-moons for the party, and Mrs Rochester who donated sashes and tiaras!
This was a fantastic start to our journey and look forward to our future For a Day parties!
