On Monday, December 9th, we held our last event of the year at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center.
21 children participated in the event, which took place from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. We were excited to have Happy Sessions Photography Boutique taking beautiful photographs of the children and their families. Andrea Canon is such a wonderfully skilled photographer. We are so grateful for the photographs that Andrea took for the families to take home as keepsakes.
We also had the fun company of Elsa and Anna from Houston Hero Headquarters. Elsa and Anna chatted with the children and posed with them for pictures. Mary Elizabeth provided boxes full of entertainment for the children to play. These boxes were so special to the children. There was a child who absolutely loved her box. She showed me all the things she was able to do with the box's contents, including constructing a square made of special sticks.
We also gave the teenagers playing cards. They were very happy to get them so they could play card games with their family members while they were getting their treatment. We had our signature tiaras, superhero capes and masks, as well as cute beanies made by The Magic Yarn Project volunteers. We want to give special thanks to the Magic Yarn Project for consistently sending the children such beautiful yarn wigs and beanies.
Our amazing volunteers helped the children to make crafts. We had Christmas ornament-making and drawstring bags to color. The children had a great time coloring and making their art projects. There was a teenage boy who was very kind. He helped the younger children when they didn’t know how to do their project, and helped them ask for a goody bag if they were too shy to ask by themselves.
For this December event we also brought Christmas cookies to the children which they really liked. When we were giving away the cookies, one of the girls who was receiving her treatment was so happy. Her smile lit up the air around her. Her mom told us, "This is the biggest smile that I have seen the whole day.”
This year, 293 children have participated in our events. This number includes patients and their siblings. All of them are children whose lives have been affected by cancer or other serious illnesses. We want to give thanks to all the volunteers who have taken their time to come and help provide the children with the best possible experience at our events.
We give thanks to our wonderful sponsors: Global, Elite Care 24 Hour, Goldfish Swimming School, Smile Sonrisa Dental, and California Pizza Kitchen. We want to give special thanks to Global for giving us a second donation this year.
Everyone at the For a Day Foundation wishes you a very special holiday season full of joy and love!
